Pattern of Biochemical Parameters in Newly Diagnosed Diabetes Mellitus Subjects

Objective: To study the spectrum of biochemical parameters of newly diagnosed diabetic patients and to contrast with healthy subjects.
Materials and Method: The present prospective study was carried out in major health organizations of district Peshawar, ICS and PHRC, KMC, Peshawar, KPK, Pakistan on 150 newly diagnosed patients with history of diabetes less than 6 months constituted group-A and same number of subjects were included by convenient sampling technique from the general population with same age, sex and social economic status who were apparently normal healthy individuals served as controls (Group-B). All the biochemical parameters viz., fasting and random blood sugar, HbA1C, lipid profile was performed at PHRC, KMC, Peshawar using standard kits procured from Elethich France.
Results: Fasting blood glucose level of Group-A was 161.73±31.98 mg/dL, Tg was 180.92±45.42 mg/dL, HDL was 40.12±4.96 mg/dL and LDL was found to be 103.90±19.01 mg/dL and a highly significant difference (p<0.000) was observed when compared with group B. HbA1c was 6.74±0.88, with remarkable change (p<0.03). Serum total cholesterol was 186.05±19.64 and change (p<0.05) was noted group-A when compared with normal healthy individual (group-B).
Conclusion: Diabetes mellitus common in all over the globe as well as in our population and it affects both male and female. Diabetes mellitus has strong taste for individuals with passive lifestyles i.e., more common in population with low physical activity.
